Meet Joi
“What’s more satisfying than seeing yourself represented on stage? Maybe nothing, but something just as satisfying is seeing a character that is not at all like you and realizing there is some common human thing that makes you understand their point of view. These are two related and distinct life-changing joys that theatre offers us. ”
— Joi
I expand theatrical possibilities to center Black female self-determination and grounded truth in worlds both familiar and fantastical. Pushing boundaries and the minds of audiences, my writing is informed by a years-long career as a Broadway actor and knowledge of musical theatre craft.

The Raven Project
Creator/Librettist
Raven Wilkinson was the first female Black ballet dancer credited with dancing for a major ballet company in the United States. Inspired by my personal conversations with Ms. Wilkinson, Raven is a work of dance theatre that explores the trajectory of her professional life and the concurrent rise of the civil rights movement, through text, dance, and music.
The theatrical piece examines Raven’s journey to confront what it means to define herself as an artist when the world won’t fully accept her identity, and the relevance of her story today.

All-American Girl
Three incredible Black women played professional baseball in the Negro Leagues of the 1940's and 1950's. One of them, though a uniquely talented and versatile pitcher, was turned away from tryouts for the All-American Girls' League you know from the movie A League of Their Own.
